New Congressional legislation would block federal funds from states that allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses or that limit local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. It would halt DOJ grants to sanctuary jurisdictions, especially those awarded under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, which is a major source of federal criminal justice funding for states.

Under the companion bills by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO), non-complying states would no longer receive millions of dollars in federal funding from the JAG program. In FY 2019, states that issued driver licenses to illegal aliens received nearly $53 million from this program.
