Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK) has introduced the No Bailouts for Illegal Aliens Act. It amends the CARES Act to prohibit sending future federal funds to states or municipalities unless they certify that they are not issuing stimulus checks or other payments to those in the United States illegally.
Tell your Senators to back this common-sense legislation!
Congress passed the CARES Act to assist American workers who are suffering during this pandemic, not to subsidize those who have broken our immigration laws. Over 33 million workers have filed for unemployment since coronavirus hit. The unemployment rate for April reached 15%, by far the highest number since the Great Depression, and economists expect it to increase significantly.
In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom is providing $75 million in state funds for financial assistance to illegal immigrants who have lost their jobs. That is the type of misuse of funds that this legislation is designed to prevent.
The bill will not affect the Paycheck Protection Program loans offered under the CARES Act to companies and nonprofit organizations, nor unemployment relief offered to legal workers.
