Hundreds of wildfires are burning in California and have consumed over 1.4 million acres. Two of them are the second and third largest fires in state history. Most of those currently ravaging the state were started by lightning, but humans cause nearly 85 percent of wildland fires in the United States, according to the National Park Service.
Last week, we asked you to tell Congress that population growth, driven primarily by immigration, is part of the problem. Now we want you to tell the state legislature. It doesn’t control immigration policy, of course, but its members have contacts in Congress, in the executive branch, and in their respective parties.
Tell the California Legislature that population growth, primarily from immigration, is a factor in the destruction from wildfires.
Beyond that, California has taken extreme measures to blur the line between legal and illegal immigration, providing costly benefits even to those who have broken our immigration laws. This encourages more illegal immigration.
More people mean more human-caused fires, but that’s only part of the story. Immigration-driven population growth has caused the number of homes on the wildland-urban interface to increase dramatically, making fires more damaging. The 2018 Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history, in both human deaths and structures destroyed.

Population growth is a factor in so many problems, and immigration causes about 90 percent of U.S. population growth. CAPS has been warning about the link between population growth and wildland fires
for many years, but only recently have the media started to acknowledge it. The state legislature needs to hear about this important issue from you.
Tell your Assembly Member and state Senator that the increased destruction of wildfires is one more reason to reduce immigration.
