Alaska’s Bear Coast is a stretch of coastline and mountain wilderness extending along the North end of the Alaska Peninsula, including Lake Clark and Katmai national parks. It is the best brown bear habitat left on earth, and it is under threat from a proposed gold mine on native corporation land inside Lake Clark National Park.
The proposed Johnson Tract mine would be located in the headwaters of the Johnson River, a critical salmon stream for Lake Clark NP bears. Beyond the bears and the more than $50 million in sustained economic activity they bring to the region, the pollution and silt associated with the mine would threaten critical Beluga Whale habitat and the Tuxedni National Wildlife Refuge.
Please use the form on this page to send a letter to Secretary of Interior Burgum urging him to protect the businesses in Southwest Alaska that depend on the area’s pristine environment and amazing wildlife.
