Tell your state leaders about Chile’s clean energy example!
The South American nation of Chile is currently experiencing an epic national clean energy revolution, lowering emissions and electricity prices while ensuring reliable sovereign power. And they’re just getting started! Here are some key data points:
The country installed a record-high 2.14 GW (2,140 MW) of solar in 2024, up sharply from 1.65 GW in 2023 and bringing the national total to 10.5 GW of solar capacity.
Renewables are now providing over half of installed capacity and over 40% of electricity generation across the entire nation.
Chile has 4.14 GW more of solar currently under construction
Chile has 3 GW of energy storage systems (e.g. grid batteries) either operational or under construction
Chile currently has 42 GW more of proposed solar and 15 GW more of proposed energy storage projects actively endeavoring to work their way through permitting!
A key step in enabling this renewables boom was the 2017 completion of a major power transmission line that enabled solar power from the Atacama Desert to be carried to major cities in the south of Chile. Since that solar-carrying power line was completed, wholesale electricity prices in parts of southern Chile fell from as high as over $200 per megawatt-hour to less than $25 per megawatt-hour!
This is yet another example of the accelerating civilization-wide shift towards clean energy abundance as we stand at the dawn of the Solar Age. Solar power, as backed up by power lines and battery storage, has a clear technological and economic edge on all other available energy sources right now and the market is responding to those incentives. U.S. state leaders looking to ensure clean energy abundance for their constituents have a straightforward path to do so: support, incentivize, and streamline a fast and easy permitting process for new solar farms, battery projects, and power transmission lines.
