Current drilling and shipping operations are already impacting marine ecosystems, with vessel strikes, noise pollution, and oil spills endangering species and causing short- and long-term damage to their habitats. Expanding operations would undoubtedly make these impacts even worse. In their analysis, the Center for Biological Diversity actually found that the Trump administration’s plan could lead to at least 4,000 oil spills in the next 5 years and 12 million gallons of crude entering our oceans, making another disaster on the scale of Deepwater Horizon a distinct possibility.
