This important bill would update the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food procurement framework to ensure that department food purchases support health, sustainability, and equity. Specifically, the changes will ensure that school districts and other department program beneficiaries can offer equitable, healthy, environmentally friendly food options, ensure that USDA’s purchasing process considers social and environmental impact in addition to cost, and improve market access for small-scale, underserved producers and businesses. It would also increase transparency by requiring reporting on the procurement process.
