Just after Vineyard Wind and Revolution Wind started delivering electricity to New England (set to save consumers hundreds of millions!), the first grid-linked power-generating turbine of the vast 2.6 GW (2,600 MW) Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project has come online! The whole project is now over 71% complete. CVOW, which like other U.S. offshore wind farms has so far overcome senseless and illegal federal sabotage attempts, should be 100% finished by early 2027. Once fully operational, it’ll produce enough clean, local, reliable, affordable electricity to power 660,000 homes!
CVOW’s development has been a model of energy/environment coexistence, with cutting-edge bubble curtains used during the pile driving stage to prevent noise vibrations from bothering marine life and construction pausing completely at key periods of the year to avoid disturbing migrating whales. Local fishers report that CVOW’s early test turbines have already become a renowned artificial reef home to sea bass, mahi, mussels and more!
Big offshore wind farms like this are creating entire new categories of jobs across America that already employ thousands of people. The Charybdis, the first-ever U.S.-built wind turbine installation ship, was built by a team of hundreds at a shipyard in Texas, and its first-ever job was to help construct the CVOW project. Offshore wind is a proven vector to help revitalize America’s moribund shipbuilding.
The multitudes of as-yet-unbuilt wind farm projects being blocked by the White House’s insane ideological attacks represent a cornucopia of economic opportunity, abundant energy, and environmental benefits that are being thrown away. Congress must stand up for American industry and pass the FREEDOM Act, a new bipartisan permitting reform bill includes extremely badly needed new legal protections to prevent the President abusing executive powers to cancel or pause energy projects.
