Muslim becomes BYU-Hawaii's first non-Mormon student president

Published on Apr 17, 2012 04:43PM
Brigham Young University-Hawaii has its first non-Mormon student body president — and he’s a Muslim.
Mustapha El Akkari, the Lebanese-born student who came to the Mormon-owned school three years ago on a full-ride basketball scholarship, takes office this week, according to an article in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
“In its 57-year-history, BYUH has never had a non-church member,” the article said, “and certainly not an Arabic-speaking Muslim leading its student body population, currently 2,673 students.”
Trouble is, El Akkari will not get his basketball scholarship during his senior year and the money typically given to student leaders is not enough to cover his higher, non-Mormon tuition.
“BYUH's tuition is $2,225 per semester for LDS members and will go up to $4,450 for non-church members,” university spokesman Michael Johanson told the Star-Advertiser. Read more here. |

Women under Sharia Law:
|
|
|
The Quran is the source of all personal status laws in Islamic countries. Therefore, the rules of religious jurisprudence concerning the position and treatment of women are also based on the Quran. In order to fully understand the position of women in Islam, one must first examine the Quranic rules concerning them. Our dilemma in today’s article has to do with the Quranic command for husbands to beat their wives.
A. Man’s Supreme Authority
The Quran gives a man complete authority in marriage: “Men stand superior to women...” (Q 4.34). The Quran justifies giving this authority to the man for the following reasons:
First, preference is given to him by the nature of his physical ability: “God hath preferred some of them over others...” (Q 4.34).
Second, preference is given to him by reason of his financial ability: “and in that they expend of their wealth...” (Q 4.34).
Apparently this higher position of man does not change even if “a woman has enough money to support herself without needing him to spend money on her, or even if she has so much money that she can spend it on him.”15 This preference is because a man has authority over a woman according to the Quran, the ultimate source of Sharia Law, regardless of his or her economic situation.
The leading authorities of Islam state that this ruling of the Quran is an everlasting one as reported by al-Aqqad:
“It precedes the development of civilizations and general legislations and remains past them.”
B. Wife’s Relationship to Husband
In Islam, the wife is a slave to her husband. The Islamic traditions stress that a woman should obey her husband’s commands. The story is told of a man who ordered his wife not to leave the house while he was traveling. During his absence, her father became ill, so she sent to the prophet of Islam asking for permission to go to her father. The response she received was: “Obey your husband.” Her father died, so she then requested permission to go see her father’s body before burial. Again the response was: “Obey your husband.” When her father was buried, the prophet sent her a message saying, “Allah [god] has forgiven her father because of her obedience to her husband.” In other words, once married, the woman’s complete emotional and intellectual abilities belong to her husband.
In addition to absolute obedience, a woman should revere her husband because Islam teaches that, “If a woman knew the right of a husband, she would not sit at his lunch and supper time until he finishes.” One time, a woman came to the prophet of Islam to ask about her obligations to her husband. He said, “If he had pus from his hair part to his foot [from head to toe] and you licked him, you would not have shown him enough gratitude.”
Obedience and reverence towards her husband are two of the wife’s duties. These duties form an element of worship for her. As the prophet of Islam once said, “If a woman prays her five prayers, fasts the month of fasting, keeps her chastity, and obeys her husband, she will enter the paradise of her Lord.” In addition, Allah will not accept the prayer of a woman if her husband is angry with her. Wed and Tortured at 13, Afghan Girl Finds Rare Justice
|
|
|
KABUL, Afghanistan — When she refused to prostitute herself or have sex with the man she was forced to marry when she was about 13, officials said, Sahar Gul’s in-laws tortured her and threw her into a dirty, windowless cellar for months until the police discovered her lying in hay and animal dung.
In July, an appeals court upheld prison sentences of 10 years each for three of her in-laws, a decision heralded as a legal triumph underscoring the advances for women’s rights in the past decade. She is recovering from her wounds, physical and emotional, in a women’s shelter in Kabul.
But to many rights advocates, Sahar Gul’s case, which drew attention from President Hamid Karzai and the international news media, is the exception that proves the rule: a small victory that masks a still-depressing picture of widespread instances of abuse of women that never come to light.
Further, advocacy groups fear that even the tentative progress that has been achieved in protecting some women could be undone if the West’s focus on Afghanistan now begins to shift away as NATO troops withdraw and the international money pumped into the economy diminishes.
“If you take away that funding and pressure, it is not sustainable,” said Heather Barr, Afghanistan researcher for Human Rights Watch.
As more details of Sahar Gul’s case have come to light — including the fact that the abuse continued even as, time and again, neighbors, police officers and her family members voiced suspicions that something was wrong — it has only reinforced how vulnerable women and girls still are in Afghanistan, particularly in rural areas where under-age marriages are common and forced ones are typical.
Sahar Gul, who is now about 14, grew up in Badakhshan, a poor, mountainous province in the north. As a young child she was shuffled around after her father died, ending up with her stepbrother, Mohammad, when she was about 9. She helped with the hard work — tending cows, sheep and an orchard of walnut and apricot trees, and making dung bricks for the fire — but her stepbrother’s wife resented her presence. The woman pressured Mohammad to give Sahar Gul up for marriage after he was contacted by a man, about 30, named Ghulam Sakhi — even though she had not yet reached the legal marriage age of 16, or 15 with a father’s consent.
In effect, Ghulam Sakhi bought her: he paid at least $5,000, according to government officials and prosecutors, an illegal exchange. He drove off with Sahar Gul to his parents’ home in Baghlan, another northern province hundreds of miles away. Read more here. |

Obama 2016
Love him or hate him, you do not know him
The blockbuster film Obama’s America 2016 will soon be in 1,000+ theaters.
Created by the producer of Oscar-winning best-picture Schindler's List, this
explosive documentary is a GAME-CHANGING threat to Obama's re-election.
Scroll down to see movie poster and theater listings.
Obama’s mentor revealed
Think about how the average voter will react upon learning that Barack Obama’s most influential mentor was a member of the Communist Party of America, a man considered so dangerous to national security that he was placed on the FBI Security Index, meaning that he would have been subject to arrest had the U.S. gone to war with the Soviet Union. That man’s name was Frank Marshall Davis, and Barack Obama mentioned him in glowing terms more than 20 times in Dreams From My Father, although not by his full name – Obama referred to Davis merely as “Frank”. Why would he not honor his most trusted mentor by revealing his full name? The most logical explanation is to keep voters from knowing that the man instrumental at helping shape his political views was a card-carrying communist who despised the United States. That Barack Obama chose an anti-American communist as his mentor is one of many explosive revelations in Obama’s America 2016. Independents and moderate Democrats who voted for Obama in 2008 will not do so again after viewing this game-changing documentary.
With help of the media, the Obama campaign is desperately trying to suppress publicity about this blockbuster movie. It is therefore up to people like you to alert your friends and family. Click HERE to see the movie trailer, and HERE to find showings in your area, or scroll down for theater listings.
