Senate Fails to Stop $500 million to Planned Parenthood

CAPITOL HILL REPORT -  September 2, 2018

As the Senate has been working through August recess, a top priority has been crafting a spending package. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) saw this as a perfect opportunity to defend the lives of the unborn. Last Thursday, he introduced an amendment that would specifically defund Planned Parenthood which received over $500 million of taxpayer money in 2017 alone from the federal government. The amendment would have streamlined that funding toward women's health centers that do not offer abortion services.

At first, Sen. Paul slammed Senate Leadership for blocking a vote on the amendment by pushing it aside because of other votes. Because of his pressure, the amendment was offered on the floor later that day. With a 60-vote threshold, the amendment failed by a 45-48 vote. This was predictable, but the American voters needed to know where their Senators stood on life. The most vulnerable Democrats running in red states put their re-elections on the line by voting against the amendment. Seven Democrats who are up for re-election in red states decided to ignore the values of their constituents and vote against the amendment. Among those Senators were Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Bob Casey (D-PA), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) who have claimed to be pro-life and even voted this year for the 20-week abortion ban.

Sen. Manchin defended his vote by claiming that no taxpayer money goes toward abortions due to the Hyde Amendment. While this narrative used by pro-choice Democrats and Republicans is true, he leaves out the bigger picture. Because all other services from Planned Parenthood are subsidized by the federal government, they are allowed to use more of their donated money for abortions. In reality, the government is subsidizing abortions.  In addition to the funding streams, Planned Parenthood has harvested baby body parts for money and refused to report instances of trafficking and abuse. This is an organization that has harmed women for decades.

Thankfully, the House version of this bill includes a defunding of Planned Parenthood. Even though both the House and Senate have made great strides in passing the spending bills needed before the September 30th deadline, the question has been whether or not they will decide to pass a continuing resolution to avoid controversy before the November elections.

Eagle Forum is disappointed in the Senate's failure to defund Planned Parenthood and will continue advocating for legislative measures to protect life.

United Methodist Church Proposes New Position Statement Saying "We Support Abortion"

REV. PAUL STALLWORTH   AUG 28, 2018   |   11:59AM    WASHINGTON, DC

Due to action of The United Methodist Church's 2012 General Conference and to negotiation of church leaders, the General Board of Church and Society held listening sessions on the Social Principles throughout the church. From them, Church and Society learned that the Social Principles need to become "more theologically grounded, more globally relevant, and more succinct" (according to a 04/12/18 press release).

Then the 2016 General Conference voted to continue Church and Society's work in revising the Social Principles. On April 11, 2018, "The United Methodist Social Principles"/"Working Draft 1" was released. Church and Society aims to propose a complete revision of the Social Principles to the 2020 General Conference.

The Social Principle on Abortion: A Brief History

Since the birth of The United Methodist Church in 1968, the Social Principles' paragraph on abortion has been contested. The 1972 paragraph stated: "We support the removal of abortion from the criminal code, placing it instead under laws relating to other procedures of standard medical practice. A decision concerning abortion should be made only after thorough and thoughtful consideration by the parties involved, with medical and pastoral counsel."

Following the United States Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which knocked down state laws against abortion, United Methodism reflected Roe; its 1976 abortion paragraph included this sentence: "We support the legal option of abortion under proper medical procedures."

Since 1976, many General Conferences have considered and debated petitions that would alter the church's teaching on abortion. Some passed. Gradually, the paragraph became more skeptical, critical, and prohibitive of abortion. That is, the Social Principle became more protective of the unborn child and mother.

President Trump Promises to Keep Pushing Pro-Life Values: "Together We Will Defend the Sanctity of Life"

STEVEN ERTELT   AUG 28, 2018   |   10:52AM    WASHINGTON, DC

Last night, President Donald Trump promised to continue pressing pro-life and religious freedom issues. His comments came during remarks to Christian leaders who he thanked for their "incredible" support.

The president said it was an honor to share a dinner with evangelical leaders "who believe in the dignity of life, the glory of God and the power of prayer."

During the meal Trump promoted to continue fighting for religious freedom and pro-life values and he defended defunding the International Planned Parenthood abortion business, which has cost the biggest abortion company in the world $100 million.

"Together we will uplift our nation in prayer, defend the sanctity of life and forever proudly remain one nation under God," he said.

"As you know, in recent years the government tried to undermine religious freedom, but the attacks on communities of faith are over," he told the audience. "We've ended it - we've ended it. Unlike some before us we are protecting religious liberty."

"We have stopped the Johnson Amendment from interfering with your First Amendment rights," Trump said.

According to CNS News:

Guests at Monday night's dinner included Faith & Freedom Coalition chairman Ralph Reed, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, Civil Rights for the Unborn director Alveda King, Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr., Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, and evangelical pastors including Franklin Graham, Robert Jeffress, Paula White and Darrell Scott
