House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green Announces Full Hearing into Threats Posed by Iranian Regime

October 15, 2023 Kaitlin Housler

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-TN-07) announced a full committee hearing to “examine threats posed by the Iranian regime to U.S. homeland security” will be held on Wednesday.

The full hearing, entitled “An Examination of the Iranian Regime’s Threats to Homeland Security,” will feature testimony from the following four witnesses:

  • Nathan A. Sales, Former Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the Department of State
  • Ms. Masih Alinejad, Author and Activist
  • Mr. Robert Greenway, Director of the Center for National Defense at The Heritage Foundation
  • Mr. Thomas S. Warrick, Senior Fellow and Director at the Future of DHS Project at the Atlantic Council and Former Department of Homeland Security Deputy Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism Policy

“The recent cowardly and despicable attacks on Israel by Hamas terrorists demonstrate once again the Iranian regime’s unending commitment to destroying Israel. These sophisticated and coordinated attacks remind us that Iran remains a threat to U.S. homeland security, and will stop at nothing to undermine our interests in the region, as well,” Green said in a statement. “In this hearing, we will hear unvarnished and objective perspectives about what the Iranian regime is capable of and the threats it poses going forward.”

Green announced a full hearing days after he led the House Homeland Security Committee in condemning Iran-backed Hamas’ attack on Israel and expressing “deep concern over the Biden administration’s actions and inactions on Iran.”

In a letter sent to President Joe Biden, the committee wrote, “We urge you to immediately re-examine your actions and inactions on Iran and its terrorist proxies and provide Israel with whatever assistance is needed to respond to these terrorists. While you say that your administration stands with the State of Israel, we certainly expect your actions will follow accordingly. We stand ready to do our part.”

Group of GOP Governors Call on the Biden Administration to ‘Radically Change Course’ and Support Israel

October 16, 2023 Kaitlin HouslerA group of Republican governors have sent a letter to President Joe Biden urging his administration to “project American strength” by fully supporting Israel’s “unquestioned right to respond and defend Itself” following Hamas’ terrorist attack on the county last weekend.

“We write today to make clear that our states absolutely condemn these heinous acts of terrorism led by Iran-backed Hamas and proudly stand with Israel and the Jewish people,” the group of 19 governors wrote. “Your administration’s initial response—including a call for a ceasefire—created dangerous confusion that has only further emboldened state-sponsors of terror and their henchmen to continue attacking Israel. Unfortunately, this type of international chaos and violence is a direct result of your administration’s appeasement-first foreign policy. Now is the moment to radically change course.”

“When the lives of American citizens hang in the balance, the American President must speak boldly and act decisively,” the governors added.

The group of governors further called on the Biden Administration to “prioritize the protection of Americans who remain in harm’s way.”

“To date, we have learned that Hamas terrorists murdered 27 American citizens and have taken an unknown number of Americans hostage. We pray for the families of those killed and missing. And we understand there is a process underway to locate American citizens taken hostage or otherwise missing and to bring them home swiftly and safely,” the governors wrote. “But the lack of transparency in this process leads us to question whether your administration is pursuing this objective with maximum energy and diligence. Your administration should not rest until these Americans safely return to American soil.”

The number of Americans confirmed dead has since risen to 29

Task force to study rejecting federal education funds returns. New study finds rural counties could be the most impacted.

BY SKY ARNOLD SEPTEMBER 25, 2023

The possibility of Tennessee rejecting federal education funding is back on the General Assembly’s agenda.

Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, and Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally, R-Oak Ridge, announced a new Joint Working Group on Federal Education Funding Monday that will study whether the state can provide education services without taking federal dollars.

Speaker Sexton filed a bill to create a similar task force last session but the Senate Education Committee tabled that legislation along with the Speaker’s other proposed bills.

According to a news release, this 10-member working group will “undertake a comprehensive review of federal education funding and its impact on the classroom, curriculum, and attainment.”  The group will additionally examine whether it would be feasible for Tennessee to reject federal education funds and recommend a strategy to reject those funds or eliminate unwanted federal restrictions.

“Any time the federal government sends money, there are always strings attached to those dollars, and there is always a possibility that it opens the state up to other regulations or restrictions,” said Speaker Sexton. “This working group will help provide a clearer picture of how much autonomy Tennessee truly has in educating our students.”

Representative Debra Moody, R-Covington) and Senator Jon Lundberg, R-Bristol, will serve as the group co-chairs. Additional members include Representatives Ronnie Glynn, D-Clarksville, Timothy Hill, R-Blountville, John Ragan, R-Oak Ridge, and William Slater, R-Gallatin, along with Senators Raumesh Akbari, D-Memphis, Joey Hensley, R-Hohenwald, Bill Powers, R-Clarksville, and Dawn White, R-Murfreesboro.

The group plans to submit a report and recommendations to key House and Senate committees by January 9, 2024.

“The education of our youth is one of the essential responsibilities of our government,” said Lt. Gov. McNally. “Federal dollars and the various mandates and restrictions that come with those dollars affect the way Tennessee’s children are educated. Due to our state’s excellent financial position, this is a worthy subject of examination and study.”

Tenn. study on rejecting federal education funds has ‘no predetermined outcome,’ leader says

By Marta W. Aldrich Oct 4, 2023, 5:50pm CDT Updated Oct 5, 2023, 9:50am CDT

A leader of the group of lawmakers exploring whether Tennessee can feasibly reject nearly $1.9 billion in federal education funding says that the panel’s work will begin in early November, and that its findings — not politics — will guide its recommendations.

“There is no predetermined outcome for this working group, or for what the information we gather is going to show,” Sen. Jon Lundberg, a co-chair of the panel, said Wednesday.

“We want to look at what federal education money we get, where it goes, what we’re required to do to get those funds, and ultimately what’s the return on the investment,” the Bristol Republican told Chalkbeat. “I think this will give us a good overview.”

Lundberg, who also chairs the Senate Education Committee, was responding to criticism from Democrats that Republicans are seeking to undermine public education, cater to charter and private school interests, and advance the political aspirations of House Speaker Cameron Sexton, a Crossville Republican and likely candidate for governor in 2026.

In February, Sexton said Tennessee should consider forgoing U.S. education dollars to free schools from federal rules and regulations, and should make up the difference with state funding. On Sept. 22, he and Lt. Gov. Randy McNally, an Oak Ridge Republican, appointed eight Republicans and two Democrats to the working group to look into the idea and report back by Jan. 9, when the General Assembly convenes a new session.

Men Who Identify As Women Are Now Eligible For Membership In Daughters Of The American Revolution
BY: REBEKA ZELJKO  OCTOBER 12, 2023

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will allow men who identify as women to join the organization following a recent amendment to their bylaws. According to DAR’s website, “Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join.” DAR now joins the growing list of woman-only organizations to capitulate to dangerous cultural changes that actively dilute the meaning of womanhood.

In a release clarifying the decision, DAR President General Pamela Rouse Wright said, “Some have asked if this means a transgender woman can join DAR or if this means that DAR chapters have previously welcomed transgender women? The answer to both questions is, yes.”

“The bylaw amendment does not change that fact, and we will continue to welcome them into our Society in the future,” she continued.

Wright emphasized during DAR’s 2023 Continental Congress that anyone seeking membership who has a birth certificate saying he or she is female may be eligible for chapter membership, The Daily Signal reported.

With increasing support from medical professionals, it has never been easier for individuals to change their legal sex on official documents which means it has never been easier for men to become legally recognized as women.

The more explicit announcement to include male-to-female transgender individuals came following revisions to the organization’s bylaws, removing the requirement that members be “personally acceptable to the chapter” while stipulating that “NSDAR and its chapters may not discriminate against an eligible applicant based on race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.”
