Tennessee immigrant rights group condemns Gov. Lee’s commitment to support Trump deportations

Lee was one of 26 Republican governors to sign a letter pledging to use “every tool at our disposal”

By: Cassandra Stephenson - December 17, 2024

A nonprofit Tennessee immigrant rights group on Monday condemned Gov. Bill Lee’s commitment to “utilize every tool at our disposal” — including state law enforcement and the National Guard — to support President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to deport more than 11 million undocumented immigrants.

Lee and 25 other Republican governors signed a letter on Dec. 11 stating their united support of Trump’s “unwavering commitment to make America safe again by addressing the illegal immigration crisis and deporting illegal immigrants who pose a threat to our communities and national security.”

Lisa Sherman-Luna, executive director of the Nashville-based Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, said in a statement that Trump’s plan has been “deemed disastrous by business leaders, economists, faith leaders and legal experts” and all Tennesseans “deserve the freedom to live and work safely and without fear in our communities no matter the color of our skin, what’s in our wallets or how we came to call Tennessee home.”

TIRRC was founded in 2003 as an advocacy group led by immigrants and refugees aiming to make Tennessee more inclusive.

About 6.1% of Tennessee’s 6.9 million residents are foreign-born, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Of those, approximately 37.6% are naturalized U.S. citizens, and 62.4% do not have citizenship.

Congress releases bill to avert holiday government shutdown

Congressional leaders Tuesday unveiled legislation to keep the government funded until March 14, unleashing a mad dash to pass the bill by the end of the week.

Why it matters: House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La.) next challenge is to find a way to ram the bill through the chamber while facing heat from his right flank over his handling of the government funding negotiations.

  • The bill includes around $100 billion in disaster relief, a one-year extension of the farm bill and provisions restricting U.S. investments in China.
  • It also includes a provision that would allow the NFL's Washington Commanders to return to the RFK Stadium site, as well as sweeping health care reforms, the details of which we reported earlier Tuesday.
  • The stopgap bill sets up a government funding fight right at the end of President-elect Trump's first 100 days in office, adding to an already-full plate awaiting lawmakers next year.

The big picture: The package includes wins for both Republicans and Democrats.

  • The mid-March end date for the short-term bill gives Republicans the opportunity to control funding levels for the second half of fiscal 2025.
  • The billions in disaster relief is a win for Democrats and Republicans in states affected by hurricanes this year — President Biden submitted a request for the funding last month. The package also includes $10 billion in economic aid for farmers.

Senate Democrats Try To Rip Apart The Republic By Abolishing The Electoral College

By: Breccan F. Thies December 17, 2024

Democrats want to be able to ignore the people and states they wish did not exist.

As states continue to certify the 2024 presidential election, far-left activists in the U.S. Senate are attempting to rip apart the republic by abolishing the Electoral College.

Sens. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Peter Welch, D-Vt., say they want to “restore democracy” by destroying one of the Constitution’s foremost safeguards against tyranny, in a move that would make it extremely difficult for most states to have proper representation in presidential elections.

“Abolishing the Electoral College will destabilize presidential elections and undermine our uniquely successful form of government,” Trent England, executive director of Save Our States, told The Federalist. “The Electoral College provides an important check and balance on our election system by limiting the power any one state can have and spreading that power out among rural and urban voters and large and small states.”

“Without the Electoral College, voters in states like California and New York will dictate the outcome of Presidential elections,” he added. “Politicians should embrace and celebrate the Electoral College instead of proposing partisan measures that will essentially rip out part of the Constitution and embroil our elections in political turmoil.”

The Senate resolution, which introduces a constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College, provides for the direct election of president and vice president by national popular vote.

Ironically, Schatz and Welch, being from less populous states, are effectively attempting to nullify the votes of their own constituents and give them to states like California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois. The resolution also calls into question the need for a Senate in the first place, as it was created in order to create a balance between the will of the people (the House) and the interests of the state, giving less populous states a place on the same scale of power as more populous ones.

Schatz, however, said that “in an election, the person who gets the most votes should win. It’s that simple. No one’s vote should count for more based on where they live. The Electoral College is outdated and it’s undemocratic. It’s time to end it.”

But it is not “that simple.” Under Schatz’s program, the president would be decided by just a handful of states, rather than the will of the people of all 50 states and the District of Columbia playing a meaningful role.

BREAKING: Liz Cheney Referred For Criminal Investigation For Witness Tampering Related to J6 ‘Star Witness’ Cassidy Hutchinson

by Cristina Laila Dec. 17, 2024 11:40 am

The Committee on House Administration’s Subcommittee on Oversight Chairman Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) released a second report on the events surrounding January 6 as well his investigation into the weaponized J6 Committee on Tuesday.

“This interim report reveals that there was not just one single cause for what happened at the U.S. Capitol on January 6; but it was a series of intelligence, security, and leadership failures at several levels and numerous entities,” Loudermilk said.

Loudermilk’s report outlined criminal recommendations against J6 Committee co-chair Liz Cheney for witness tampering based on her communication with J6 ‘star witness’ Cassidy Hutchinson.

The Committee’s Top Findings:

Musk’s “Super-IPO” to Send SHOCKWAVES Through the Market?

1. Former Representative Liz Cheney colluded with “star witness” Cassidy Hutchinson without Hutchinson’s attorney’s knowledge.

2. Former Representative Liz Cheney should be investigated for potential criminal witness tampering based on the new information about her communication.

3. Cassidy Hutchinson’s most outrageous claims lacked any evidence, and the Select Committee had knowledge that her claims were false when they publicly promoted her.

  • President Trump did not attack his Secret Service Detail at any time on January 6.
  • President Trump did not have intelligence indicating violence on the morning of January 6.
  • Cassidy Hutchinson falsely claimed to have drafted a handwritten note for President Trump on January 6.
  • Representative Cheney and Cassidy Hutchinson baselessly attempted to disbar Hutchinson’s former attorney.

4. Former Representative Liz Cheney used the January 6 Select Committee as a tool to attack President Trump, at the cost of investigative integrity and Capitol security.

Trump’s Unexpected Turn: Embracing Project 2025 After Initial Criticism

Donald Trump’s relationship with Project 2025 highlights a twist of public disapproval alongside strategic private alliances.

At a Glance

  • Trump initially distanced himself from Project 2025.
  • Project 2025 promotes extensive presidential powers.
  • The project gained more resonance with Trump’s campaign.
  • Trump nominated individuals linked to Project 2025.

Trump’s Initial Distance

Donald Trump initially claimed to have “nothing to do with” Project 2025. During his 2024 campaign, he publicly criticized the project, expressing dissent towards its elements. This project, described as a right-wing policy blueprint, was criticized for aiming to create an imperial presidency with extensive power. Despite the criticism, Trump’s attitudes towards Project 2025 later appeared to align with some of his presidential aspirations.

Project 2025 Features

Project 2025, outlined in a 920-page document called the “Mandate for Leadership,” was developed by the Heritage Foundation. It includes proposals for significant changes, such as reinstating Schedule F to enable easier firing of career employees and creating a personnel database intended to replace federal civil servants. The plan promotes the unitary executive theory and is supported by over 100 conservative organizations. Critics argue that such measures would break down the system of checks and balances.

Digital safety: Are you using one of the world’s most popular passwords?

This article was first published in December 2023 and updated in July 2024.

  • Our most common passwords are all simple, short and predictable leaving us vulnerable to hacking and cybercrime, according to global password management company NordPass.
  • The world's biggest password leak to date in July 2024 has increased the risk of ‘credential stuffing’, where cyber attackers take advantage of people using the same user names and passwords across multiple accounts, experts warn.
  • The World Economic Forum's Partnership Against Cybercrime brings together law enforcement agencies, cybersecurity companies, global corporations and not-for-profit alliances to help combat cybercrime.

What makes a terrible online password? Something simple, short and predictable.

Astonishingly, those are also the characteristics of the world’s most common online password, which is 123456, according to online password management company NordPass.

NordPass also calls 123456 the worst password, because as well as being used over 4.5 million times, it takes less than a second for hackers to crack – like the rest of the top 20 most popular online passwords.

Here are the other passwords on the list, as well as some advice on improving your passwords to protect yourself from cybercrime, a growing threat according to the World Economic Forum's latest Global Risk report.

The world’s most common online passwords

NordPass analysed a vast database of online passwords, then with the help of a team of researchers investigated which ones had been stolen with the use of malware.
