Clarence Thomas Delivers a Message to Roe v. Wade Leaker

May 7, 2022 Updated: May 7, 2022

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Friday defended judicial independence, arguing that government institutions mustn't allow themselves to be strong-armed into delivering outcomes that people demand, according to news outlets.

Thomas made the remarks at a May 6 judicial conference in Atlanta, where he was asked by a moderator to discuss the biggest threats to judicial independence, according to Law360.

In his response, Thomas decried what he described as an erosion of respect for the high court and made an apparent reference to protests that erupted after the leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion suggesting the court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, with major implications for access to abortion.

He said that as a society, "we are becoming addicted to wanting particular outcomes, not living with the outcomes we don't like," according to Reuters.

"We can't be an institution that can be bullied into giving you just the outcomes you want. The events from earlier this week are a symptom of that," he added.

A flurry of protests and counter-protests broke out outside the Supreme Court after Politico obtained and published the draft opinion that would uphold a Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy and overturn the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide

Abortion Enthusiasts Block the Front Door of Lower Manhattan Church

By KATHRYN JEAN LOPEZ  May 7, 2022 1:56 PM

"God killed his kid, why can't I kill mine?" A woman in a white bathing suit, stuffed to simulate pregnancy, has a few baby dolls attached - they were the babies she was aborting, she told us. "Help me abort my babies." After dancing and spinning on the grounds outside the church, she later complained, "My aborted babies are all wet." (It was raining.)

This was the scene outside Old St. Patrick's Cathedral. Pro-life Catholics were gathered for Mass and a Rosary procession to the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic on the next block. This has been done for 14 years on the first Saturday of every month (except for some of the 2020 shutdown). This morning, however, we did not process to the sidewalk across from the clinic, because the police advised us not to, saying they couldn't be sure of our protection. I can confirm there were a lot of new faces, many of these were not the regular crowd protesting prayer. The gal in the bathing suit certainly seemed to be looking for a fight, imploring the priest, Fr. Fidelis Moscinski, a Franciscan Friar of the Renewal - who she repeatedly referred to as "b**ch" - to come out and face her.

Anti-abortion group's headquarters is set on fire in Wisconsin, authorities say

BY MITCHELL WILLETTS UPDATED MAY 08, 2022 2:06 PM

The headquarters of an anti-abortion organization in Wisconsin was set on fire and vandalized overnight, officials said Sunday, May 8. At the Madison office building - which is used by the non-profit political action group Wisconsin Family Action - investigators found evidence that at least one Molotov cocktail was used, WISC reported. Madison fire officials are investigating the incident as arson. The apparent attack comes days after a Supreme Court draft opinion proposing to overturn Roe V. Wade was leaked to the public. If the 1973 decision were overturned, many say that abortions would be criminalized in much of the country.

"What you're going to see here is a direct threat against us," Julain Appling, head of Wisconsin Family Action, told the Wisconsin State Journal. "Imagine if somebody had been in the office when this happened. They would have been hurt."

Exclusive: GOP Senators Slam Schumer For 'Slandering' Justices And Enabling Left's 'Authoritarian' Tactics

BY: EMILY JASHINSKY MAY 06, 2022

Blackburn, Lee, and Cruz asked Schumer to condemn threats against justices and 'respect' the court's independence.

Atrio of Republican senators from the powerful Judiciary Committee is calling on Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to dramatically walk back his rhetoric on the leaked Dobbs opinion, accusing the majority leader of "slander[ing]" Supreme Court justices and enabling "authoritarian" conduct from Democrats.

In a Thursday letter first obtained by The Federalist, Sens. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, directly asked Schumer to condemn threats against justices and "respect" the court's independence by refraining from intimidation efforts aimed at pressuring the majority into a different ruling.

Asked by The Federalist on Friday whether Schumer condemns the tactics of groups like "Ruth Sent Us," which include publishing the alleged private addresses of justices and demonstrating outside their homes, the senator's press secretary did not respond. Schumer's office also declined to respond when asked whether the leaking of Justice Alito's draft opinion will subject the judicial process to inappropriate external pressures.

Blackburn, Lee, and Cruz took particular issue with Schumer's rapid reaction to the Politico report that included Alito's February draft of the majority opinion in Dobbs. "Immediately after this draft was leaked, you attacked the Supreme Court justices from the floor of the Senate, and again from the steps of the U.S. Capitol," they wrote. "Specifically, during your May 3, 2022 remarks on the floor of the U.S. Senate, you stated, 'Several of these  conservative justices . . . have lied to the U.S. Senate, ripped up the Constitution, and defiled both precedent and the Supreme Court's reputation.'"

Roe Destroyed Many Social Institutions That Are Unlikely To Return

       BY: JOHN R. LOTT, JR.MAY 09, 2022

With the news that the U.S. Supreme Court will likely overturn Roe v. Wade, commentary has largely concentrated on the moral issues, women's desires to not bear a child to term, and the soundness of the original court decision. However, the current discussion also provides a chance to evaluate how liberalizing abortion rules from 1969 to 1973 ignited profound long-term social changes in America and whether the court's decision will reverse those changes.

One often misunderstood fact: Legal abortions didn't start with Roe or even with the five states that liberalized abortion laws in 1969 and 1970. Before Roe, women could have abortions when their lives or health were endangered. Even in some conservative states, such as Kansas, doctors had very liberal interpretations of what constituted a danger to health.

Nevertheless, Roe substantially increased abortions, more than doubling the rate per live birth in the five years from 1972 to 1977. But many other changes occurred at the same time, among them: a sharp increase in premarital sex; a sharp rise in out-of-wedlock births; a drop in the number of children placed for adoption; and a decline in marriages that occur after the woman is pregnant.

Many of these changes might seem contradictory. For example, why would both the number of abortions and out-of-wedlock births go up? If there were more illegitimate births, why were fewer children available for adoption? When examined closer, however, one can make sense of these changes.

Encouraging Premarital Sex

Part of the answer to the first puzzle lies in attitudes toward premarital sex. With abortion seen as a backup, women and men became less careful in using contraceptives and more likely to have premarital sex.

There were more unplanned pregnancies. But legal abortion did not mean every unplanned pregnancy led to an abortion. After all, just because abortion is legal does not mean that the decision is easy.

Academic studies have found that legalized abortion, by encouraging premarital sexincreased the number of unplanned births, even outweighing the reduction in unplanned births due to abortion.

Parents and politicians alike are slamming President Biden for his failure to address the US' ongoing baby formula shortage - with one distressed dad saying 'never did I think I would have a problem finding food for my baby in America.'

The backlash against Biden comes as the formula shortage has reached crisis levels in recent weeks, with at least 12 states facing 40 percent or higher out of stock rates.

As shelves across the country meant to carry formula remain largely barren, parents such as Russell Bleck, a husband and father in Lexington, Kentucky, have become desperate to get their hands on the all important product.

The couple, who survived the notorious Las Vegas concert shooting in 2017 - the deadliest mass shooting by an individual in US history - moved to Kentucky later that year ahead of the birth of their daughter, Aurora, now 3, with plans to raise a family.

Speaking to Fox News Digital Friday, Bleck - whose wife, Bre, gave birth to the pair's second child, Asher, six weeks ago - said he finds the shortage 'very stressful,' and pleaded for both the government and media to better address the crisis.
