AB 1998 (Castillo) would change California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act by redefining “sex” to mean biological male or female and requiring that intimate spaces in businesses such as bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, and dressing rooms be separated based on biological sex, regardless of a person’s gender identity. The bill would still allow single-occupancy restrooms to be gender-neutral and states that businesses would not be required to make structural changes beyond what other laws already require.
