Protect Programs that Serve Children with Disabilities

To support their healthy development and well-being, young children with disabilities and developmental delays need critical services. A network of federal programs is often the key to making such services accessible.  But right now, key parts of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are at risk in the federal budget process. Congress needs to hear from you.

What’s at Stake:

For 50 years, IDEA has ensured that children with disabilities have access to early intervention and special education services. In Georgia alone...

  • Over 34,500 children receive Preschool Special Education (IDEA Part B).
  • More than 17,500 infants and toddlers receive Early Intervention services through Babies Can’t Wait (IDEA Part C).

But the proposed FY 2026 federal budget puts this progress in jeopardy.

What We Must Do

  • Protect IDEA by maintaining—and increasing—dedicated funding. Proposed consolidations and flat funding threaten access to essential services.
  • Preserve the full structure of IDEA. Each part serves unique and critical roles.
  • Grow the program by making long-overdue investments that meet the growing needs of young children with disabilities and their families.

TAKE ACTION: Urge Congress to increase funding and protect the full structure of IDEA. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive.
