LEASE TAX BILL HEADED TO GOVERNOR'S DESK (HB2317)
Tuesday, March 4th, on a vote of 111-0, the Illinois House of Representatives passed House Bill 2317.  Beginning January 1, 2015, House Bill 2317 would change the tax base for motor vehicle leases from the selling price of the leased vehicle to the amount of the lease payments. This legislation passed out of the Senate 55-0 last Spring.

Next, House Bill 2317 will go to the Governor's Desk for his signature. We ask dealers to contact the Governor and urge him to sign House Bill 2317 into law. The Honorable Governor Pat Quinn, 207 Statehouse, Springfield, Il. 62706. He can also be contacted here, through IADA's website.

  2014 DEALERSHIP WORKFORCE STUDY
Participation in the 2014 NADA Dealership Workforce Study is now open to NADA and ATD dealer members.

The study, conducted by NADA and ESI Trends (formerly DeltaTrends), is the industry's most comprehensive analysis of the dealership workforce. It aims to provide dealers with the data to make informed recruiting and hiring decisions and help them meet their number-one challenge: attracting and retaining talented employees.

Dealers can enroll as individual dealerships or dealer groups using a secure, web-based process that involves completing a survey and uploading their payroll data. At the study's close, each participating dealership will receive a complimentary customized report (Basic Report) comparing its own employee compensation, retention and turnover, work schedules, hours of operation and employee benefits programs against data aggregated on a regional and national basis. Participants also receive, free of charge, the Dealership Workforce Industry Report providing cogent analysis of the industry as a whole, including state-of-the-workforce and demographic trends, plus aggregated compensation, retention, and benefits data for each region of the U.S. Participants can purchase additional customized reports providing even more data.

NADA directors and ATAEs can help promote this important study by encouraging all dealer members in their states and regions to participate; the greater the level of participation, the more accurate the findings can be. Armed with the facts, dealers can address issues such as turnover (sales consultant is the highest turnover position at 62 percent), the "gender gap" (females make up only 18 percent of the dealership workforce), and generational issues such as the need to attract Gen Y employees. The 2013 study showed improvement: Dealerships are hiring more women and Millennials, salaries in general increased, and total dealership employee turnover, at 35 percent, is less than the government's estimate of total separations in the entire private sector (41 percent).

The 2014 Study closes on April 30, 2014. Eligible dealers can enroll at www.nadaworkforcestudy.com. Email WorkforceStudy@nada.org or call 800.557.6232 with questions.

FEDERATED INSURANCE: AUTO DEALER CLAIM OF THE MONTH
Auto Dealer Claim of the Month - March 2014

Federated Insurance's "Claim of the Month" - Could it happen to you?

A young lady entered the dealership asking to take a test drive. The dealership's employee judged her to be the required 20 years of age, and allowed her to take a vehicle. During the test drive, the customer picked up some friends, and later, caused an accident, injuring herself and her passengers. The subsequent investigation revealed the customer was only 16 years old. The employee who allowed the test drive did not ask to see her license or proof of insurance. She had neither.
Claim amount: $475,000

What policies are in place to help prevent this from happening at your dealership? Do you know who's driving your vehicles? Federated recommends several best practices to help protect your business and manage risks; for example,
•    Accompany customers on all test drives.
•    Require copies of the customer's valid driver's license and proof of insurance.
•    Establish a time limit for each test drive.

These are just a few loss control recommendations you can use to help protect your dealership. To learn more, contact your local Federated representative and request a copy of our "Keys to Success" risk management brochure. Federated Mutual Insurance Company is recommended by 17 state and national auto dealer associations just like yours for customized insurance programs and value-added risk management services, such as Federated's Shield NetworkSM, the Risk Management Resource Center, and the Federated Employment Practices NetworkSM. To discover how Federated can help you create or ramp up your own risk management program, or to contact your local Federated representative, click here.
