Concern Over Tariffs Continues To Grow
Comments by 2018 NADA Chairman Wes Lutz, Michigan. Wes also spoke to Illinois dealers in April who attended the IADA Spring Conference in Scottsdale.
Even from a distance, it's easy to see that broad-based tariffs on vehicles and auto parts would result in seismic unintended consequences. So, as we have done so many times before, NADA is rolling up its sleeves and getting to work. We are hard at work educating the administration about the reality of the auto industry, and we are urging Congress to exercise oversight on this process and identify the potential economic impacts of any new tariffs. We are working on an independent economic impact study designed to measure the potential impact that tariffs would have on dealerships and their American customers, and we will present the results of that study to the Department of Commerce through our testimony at a July public hearing.
And we will be clear throughout: NADA is not opposed at all to the president's goals of addressing unfair trade practices and preserving American jobs. But we must find the right tools for accomplishing those goals. Overbroad tariffs on autos and auto parts are the wrong tools because they will raise prices on new cars and trucks and jeopardize affordability and choice for millions of our customers. Click here for the full commentary.

Other Groups Weighing In
President Donald Trump's threat to slap heavy tariffs on imported cars and parts may cost hundreds of thousands of American jobs and raise auto prices in the U.S. by roughly 10 percent, reports CBS news. That's according to analyses from economists, industry groups, lawmakers, and carmakers ahead of a June 29 deadline to submit comments to the U.S. Commerce Department. The American International Automobile Dealers Association predicts consumers would pay an average of $6,400 "extra" on a $30,000 vehicle, according to comments it filed with the Commerce Department on June 28. "Autos and auto parts aren't a national security threat, but tariffs are a real and dangerous threat to our economy," AIADA President and CEO Cody Lusk said. Dealers and their employees "strongly support a pro-growth economic agenda, and believe it can be accomplished with a positive trade message, not the threat of tariffs and taxes." Read AIADA's full comments submitted to the Department of Commerce here.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is circulating a letter affirming that imported autos and parts are not a security threat. If you are concerned about the potential these tariffs have on your business you should contact your Member of Congress and ask to sign a letter of support for the U.S. auto industry bipartisan letter being circulated by Representative Jackie Walorski (R-IN), Mike Kelly (R-PA), Ron Kind (D-WI) and Terri Sewell (D-AL) to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross affirming that cars are not a national security threat.

Legal Reminder: Annual Minimum Wage Increases for Chicago and Cook County Employers July 1, 2018
As of July 1, 2018, Chicago employers will be required to pay their employees a minimum wage of $12.00 per hour. Chicago's July 1st minimum wage increase will be followed by another annual increase that will raise Chicago's minimum wage to $13 per hour beginning July 1, 2019. On July 1, 2020 and each year thereafter, the Chicago minimum wage will be subject to an annual increase based on the Consumer Price Index. The Chicago Minimum Wage Ordinance can be found here. These minimum wage increases apply only to Chicago employers.
Cook County's minimum wage ordinance will increase the minimum wage for employers located in Cook County, but outside of Chicago, from $10 per hour to $11 per hour effective July 1, 2018. This increase is part of an annual minimum wage increase. Each July 1st the minimum wage will increase by $1 until July 1, 2020, when it hits $13 per hour and will increase annually thereafter at the rate of inflation, not to exceed 2.5%. Home rule communities other than Chicago that are located within Cook County can vote to opt out of the minimum wage increase.
To summarize, there are 3 different minimum wages in Illinois, depending on what part of the State you are in:
- The State minimum wage is $8.25 per hour.
- The City of Chicago has a minimum wage of $12.00 which will increase every July 1st until it reaches $13 per hour on July 1, 2019, followed by annual increases thereafter based on Consumer Price Index.
- Cook County, outside Chicago, has an $11 minimum wage with annual increases every July 1st, except for municipalities that vote to remain at $8.25 per hour.
