GET OUT THE VOTE FOR MID TERM ELECTIONS
Tomorrow is November 2nd Election Day, most importantly go to vote and encourage your family, friends and employees to vote. It is a privilege! Remind them that their vote matters to our industry. IADA continues to work to keep members informed as to the legislative climate. This year, four auto dealers across the country have thrown their hats in the ring for public office! In Illinois, the Governorship is up for grabs as is the U.S. Senate seat formerly occupied by President Obama. Both races are considered a toss-up the day before the election. All 118 seats in the Illinois House are up for election as are 1/3 of the Illinois Senate seats.
By all indications, this election will be one of the most dramatic in recent history. Be a part of it, and make your voice heard on November 2nd. |

EPA AND NHTSA PROPOSE CHANGES TO FUEL ECONOMY LABEL
The EPA and NHTSA held hearings in Chicago and Los Angeles regarding their proposed changes to the Fuel Economy Label which will become effective in 2012. These proposed changes represent the most significant changes to the fuel economy label since its inception over 30 years ago. Testifying in Chicago was Desmond Roberts, Advantage Chevrolet, representing IADA, CATA and NAMAD. Also attending in Chicago was IADA President Pete Sander and NADA Vice President Legal/Regulatory Affairs Andy Koblenz. Testifying in Los Angeles was Forrest McConnell, Chairman of NADA’s Regulatory Affairs Committee and president of McConnell Honda and Acura of Montgomery, Ala.
The central theme of the dealer’s testimony was that fuel economy labels simply should provide useful facts in an easy to understand manner. (NADA) urged federal regulators to stick with fuel economy labels that “won’t confuse the buying public, won’t make new vehicle purchasing decisions more difficult and won’t treat automakers or fuel types unfairly.”
NADA supports labels that display miles per gallon, annual fuel costs and vehicle performance compared to others in its class (or its individual CAFE target), but not against all makes and models. The following points were emphasized during the testimony.
- “First, as the joint proposal correctly states, most prospective light-duty vehicle purchasers only focus on fuel economy when fuel prices are relatively high and only as a relatively minor criterion when compared to other vehicle attributes. Fuel economy information and labels should leverage this reality, not fight it.
- “Second, even fewer prospective purchasers consider greenhouse gas and other emissions when shopping for new vehicles. That doesn’t mean they don’t want cleaner and greener vehicles; it is just that they recognize that new vehicles are all cleaner and greener. Again, NHTSA and EPA should strive to leverage, not fight, this reality.
- “Third, prospective purchasers who focus on fuel economy or emissions performance tend to evaluate comparative information before coming to a dealership. This simply reflects how vehicle shopping is done these days; customers use the Internet to peruse comparative information and make preliminary purchase criteria decisions in the comfort of their home or office before arriving at a dealership to kick the tires and test drive the vehicles they will actually consider. It is just one more truth EPA and NHTSA must account for and accommodate.”
Representatives of automakers and auto dealers agreed a new window label was necessary but said assigning a letter grade across vehicle categories would be akin to comparing apples and oranges. And the auto industry has said that a grading system is imbued with school-time memories of passing and failing.
The Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are looking at two label designs, both of which would provide additional information on fuel economy and emissions to help consumers compare makes and models, be they electric, plug-in hybrids, gas or diesel.
One of the proposed redesigns has environmental groups applauding and the auto industry crying foul because only the most fuel-efficient models, regardless of vehicle category, can score well. The most controversial component of that design is a prominent letter grade ranging from A+ to D that takes up nearly half the label and reflects the vehicle’s fuel economy and tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions.
NHTSA and the EPA are proposing these changes due to the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 specifically calls on these agencies to rate available vehicles according to fuel economy, ghgs and smog forming pollutants.
