Virginia: Close Loopholes in the Drunk Driving Law
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) needs your help to stop drunk driving in Virginia. Help us advance HB 561 by Delegate Hope to close loopholes in the drunk driving ignition interlock law.

Currently, drunk drivers must wait via a hard license suspension before installing an ignition interlock device. HB 561 allows for the use of an ignition interlock as soon as possible after a DUI in conjunction with a restricted license. HB 561 is a more effective approach than hoping for the best with license suspension.

Interlocks are more effective than license suspension. According to a meta-analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, interlocks reduce repeat drunk driving offenses by 67 percent. An ignition interlock is more effective than license suspension alone, as up to 75 percent of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license.
