Rhode Island: Help stop drunk driving
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) requests your help to advance legislation to make Rhode Island the 35th state to require ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers, including every first-time offender.

H 7489 and S 2970 by Representative Noret and Senator McKenney, at the request of Attorney General Peter Neronha, improves the drunk driving law by requiring ignition interlocks for all first-time convicted drunk drivers for six months. Rhode Island’s current law is limited to repeat offenders and first-time offenders with a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or greater.

How can this legislation save lives? In 2023, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 24 people killed in drunk driving deaths representing 33 percent of all traffic deaths. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, laws like H 7489 and S 2970 reduce drunk driving deaths by 26%. Utilizing this information, AAA and MADD estimates that H 7489 and S 2970 will save six lives each year.

On this page, please email your state lawmakers in support of H 7489 and S 2970 to help stop drunk driving.
