What is an ignition interlock? An ignition interlock is a device about the size of a smart phone that is wired into the ignition system of a vehicle. If an interlock user is drunk, the vehicle will not start. Interlocks cost around $3 a day to lease. Currently, these devices are required for all convicted drunk drivers in Arizona, but loopholes exist that HB 2573 and HB 2800 will help to fix.
How these two bills help to stop drunk driving? HB 2573 eliminates the 45-day waiting period before a drunk driver can start utilizing an ignition interlock device. HB 2800 makes it a class 6 felony to knowingly lend a motor vehicle to someone who is required to have an ignition interlock device installed, if that person is then involved in a collision that results in death or serious bodily injury.
