  Agriculture Workers and Employers, Interim Guidance from CDC and the U.S. Department of Labor  
 

Workers on farms, ranches, and other production agriculture work sites are considered critical infrastructure workers within the Food and Agriculture SectorAll agriculture work sites should follow, as feasible, relevant aspects of CDC guidance, including but not limited to this document, CDC's Critical Infrastructure Guidance, and guidance from regulatory bodies such as the Food and Drug Administration, as needed. Additionally, they should work directly with appropriate state and local public health officials and occupational safety and health professionals.

  Department Confirms First Spotted Lanternfly Hatch of 2020  
  The Maryland Department of Agriculture has confirmed the first spotted lanternfly hatch of 2020. The first instar nymph of the season was reported by a department employee while surveying for the pest in the upper northeast corner of Cecil County near the Pennsylvania border. The spotted lanternfly poses a major threat to the region's agricultural industries as it feeds on over 70 different types of plants and crops - including grapes, hops, apples, peaches, oak, pine, and many others.   Maryland Farm Bureau Applauds Hogan Administration For Funding Rural Internet  
 

The Maryland Farm Bureau welcomes Governor Larry Hogan's announcement of nearly $9.6 million in funding, which will be administered by the Office of Rural Broadband, to support broadband internet connectivity for more than 5,000 households and businesses in Maryland's rural counties and communities. Housed in the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, the Office of Rural Broadband was established by executive order in 2017 to expand broadband capabilities statewide in rural areas of Maryland.   Maryland Farm Bureau Announces Key Staff Changes  
 

The Maryland Farm Bureau announced three key staff changes in May. Lindsay Stine, former Maryland Farm Bureau Communications Intern has been named Regional Field Manager for the western and national capital area region of Maryland. Ryan Zimmerman, will shift his current territory as a Regional Field Manager in West and Central Maryland to Central and Souther Maryland, which includes Howard, St. Mary's, Calvert, Anne Arundel, Carroll, Baltimore, Harford and Cecil counties. Emily Solis, left her position as the Communications Manager for Maryland Farm Bureau in early May to take a position at the Animal Agriculture Alliance as a Communications Specialist. The American Farm Bureau Federation, in partnership with Farm Credit, has opened online applications for the 2021 Farm Bureau Ag Innovation Challenge. This national business competition showcases U.S. startup companies that are addressing challenges faced by America's farmers, ranchers and rural communities.   Department Announces Dates for Pesticide Container Recycling Program  
 

The Maryland Department of Agriculture's Pesticide Regulation Section has announced 2020 dates and locations for its pesticide container recycling program. Each regional location will offer multiple recycling dates from June through September. This free program allows farmers, certified applicators, and other pesticide users to recycle used plastic containers at no cost. Learn More.
