  USDA Announces Grants for Urban Agriculture and Innovative Production  
 

Up to $4 million in competitive grants is available to support the development of urban agriculture and innovative production projects. USDA will accept applications on Grants.gov for planning and implementation projects until midnight July 30, 2021. More here.

  USDA Seeks Applications for Placemaking Grants to Spur Economic Growth and Community Development in Rural America  
 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it is accepting applications for eligible entities to provide planning, training and technical assistance to rural communities to foster place making activities. USDA is making up to $3 million in cooperative agreement grants available under the Rural Placemaking Innovation Challenge (RPIC). Eligible entities may use the funds to help rural communities create plans to enhance capacity for broadband access; preserve cultural and historic structures; and support development in transportation, housing, and recreational spaces.   Department Announces Dates for Annual Pesticide Container Recycling Program  
 

The Maryland Department of Agriculture's Pesticide Regulation Section has announced the 2021 dates and drop-off locations for its Pesticide Container Recycling Program. On certain days from June through September farmers, pesticide applicators, and other pesticide users can recycle used plastic pesticide containers at no cost at locations in Frederick, Harford, Kent, Montgomery, Talbot, Washington, and Wicomico counties.   Calling All Farm Dogs!  
 

In celebration of farm dogs everywhere and the many ways they support farmers and ranchers in producing nutritious food for families and their pets across America, Farm Bureau is teaming up with Purina to bring you the fourth annual Farm Dog of the Year competition. Farmers and ranchers are invited to submit nominations for the 2022 Farm Bureau Farm Dog of the Year contest. Nominations close July 2, 2021. More here.

  Prevailing Wage and Practices - Agricultural Employment Surveys  
 

The Maryland Department of Labor (MDOL) has started conducting the 2021 Agricultural Employment Surveys (AES), beginning May 17th and continuing until early October. The results will provide an inside look at Maryland's prevailing wages and employment practices for agricultural jobs within the state by sector - useful information for those employers preparing agricultural job offers.   Maryland Wine and Grape Promotion Fund Accepting Grant Applications  
 

The Governor's Advisory Commission on Maryland Wine and Grape Growing is accepting grant applications for funding from the Maryland Wine and Grape Promotion Fund. The fund seeks to promote the production and consumption of Maryland wine, and increase growth of commercial wine grapes across the state. More here.

  Sign-Up Period for Cover Crop Program Begins July 1  
 

The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) today announced that the sign-up period for this year's annual Cover Crop Program will run from July 1-16, 2021. The popular conservation program provides farmers with cost-share assistance to offset seed, labor, and equipment costs associated with planting cover crops on their fields in fall to build healthy soils and protect the Chesapeake Bay.   2021 AFBF Summer Cookout Marketbasket Survey  
 

Grassroots Farm Bureau members are invited to participate in American Farm Bureau's Summer Cookout Survey of retail food prices commonly used to prepare a cookout meal for 10 people. Survey results will be used for a July 4th national publicity campaign on the retail cost of food that emphasizes its relatively small increase in price over time compared to other consumer goods, as well as the contribution of U.S. food, fiber and fuel production to national security. More here.
