Specifically, it requires that abortions after the second trimester be performed in a hospital and only when the life of the mother is at serious risk, as certified by three physicians. It also mandates that any infant born alive during such procedures receive the same level of life-saving care and medical equipment that would be used for any other newborn with signs of viability.
This legislation brings Massachusetts in line with basic medical standards that prioritize the health of women and affirm the dignity and rights of all born-alive infants.
