Call to Action: Oppose LB809 - Blocks Renter Protections

LB809 would prohibit cities and counties (political subdivisions) from enacting or enforcing local ordinances that prohibit landlords from taking certain actions, limiting what local governments can require or restrict in the rental market.

Why it matters

  • It preempts local control, preventing communities from adopting renter protections that respond to local housing needs.
  • It rolls back or block local fair housing style protections, such as local “source of income” measures designed to reduce barriers for renters using lawful assistance.
  • It increases housing instability by limiting the tools cities and counties can use to address discrimination and access to housing.

Hearing information
LB809 will be heard by the Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 1:30 PM in Room 1525
