FLAVORED E-CIG BAN
TOBACCO LEGISLATION
2019 MBP SURVEY

E-CIGS
For those of you with convenience stores, e-cigarettes have been a great profit center for the past few years. There has been a growing concern about young people vaping instead of smoking cigarettes. Obviously, smoking cigarettes we know is bad, but now major health concerns are being brought to light regarding vaping as well. There is a strong movement to ban flavored e-cigarettes as marketing flavors like peppermint and bubblegum seem to be attracting the youth to try vaping. Our argument has been that vaping has been a great way for people to kick the smoking habit. This week, an executive order was issued from Michigan's Department of Health and Human Services and the governor to ban flavored vape products. Stores that carry flavored vape products will have 30 days to comply, or they may be stuck with inventory they already purchased. I don't know where this is headed, but whenever crazy legislation like this starts happening in other states, it is usually not too long before a similar movement begins in NJ. I will keep you updated.

TOBACCO
Next week, the Senate Health Committee is hearing two pieces of legislation on tobacco. One actually works to our benefit as it will ban tobacco and vaping products from being sold in pharmacies or any other retail department stores that also sell pharmacy. This would include supermarkets since they all have pharmacies as part of their operations inside their stores. Should a bill like that pass, your stores will then become virtually the only places where tobacco users can purchase their tobacco. The other bill will prohibit coupons or rebates for any cigarette or tobacco product at the retail point of sale. I have mentioned this issue in the past, and I would like to get a clearer picture if this affects you or not. Many members have indicated that they either do not accept these coupons, or have very little reliance upon them. It is important for me to know if this has a big effect on you.

Amid Vaping Crackdown, Michigan to Ban Sale of Flavored E-Cigarettes
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan said Wednesday that she would outlaw the sale of flavored e-cigarettes in her state, part of a national crackdown on vaping amid a recent spike in illnesses tied to the products. The move in Michigan is part of a wave of growing pressure from politicians around the country for more regulation of e-cigarettes and their use by teenagers. Several state attorneys general have called for the federal government to ban flavored e-cigarettes, and bills to stop sales of flavored vaping products have been introduced in California and Massachusetts. In New York, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed a law raising the minimum age to purchase e-cigarettes to 21.

Retailers Happy That New Jersey Gas Tax Remains Steady For 2020
Word that New Jersey's gasoline tax will not go up this fall is being welcomed by retailers across the state. But they say there's a way to bring the cost down a tad. . .This year, it stays at 41 cents. That's good news for Sal Risalvato, head of the New Jersey Gasoline, Convenience Store and Automotive Association. "Each time the tax goes up, it makes us less competitive with our neighboring states," he told KYW Newsradio, "and we have been able to show the amount of gasoline volume that has crossed over the border." He estimates past increases have seen 415 million gallons a year in sales go to Delaware and New York state. He doesn't have numbers for Pennsylvania.

Federal Investigators Think Black-Market Vaping Products, Not Legal E-Cigarettes, Are to Blame for Respiratory Illnesses
Despite attempts to blame recent reports of respiratory illnesses among vapers on legal e-cigarettes, investigators are increasingly inclined to think the real problem is hazardous chemicals in black-market THC and nicotine products. The Washington Post reports that "state and federal health authorities are focusing on the role of contaminants or counterfeit substances as a likely cause of vaping-related lung illnesses." They "are narrowing the possible culprits to adulterants in vaping products purported to have THC...as well as adulterants in nicotine vaping products."

Ford Puts Expiration on Autonomous Vehicles
How long is the shelf life for self-driving cars? A mere four years, according to John Rich, operations chief for Ford autonomous vehicles, Teslarati reports. While Rich believes the world will soon have many fully automated vehicles on the roads, he doesn't believe those cars will last long before retirement. Still, it's good for business. "The thing that worries me least in this world is decreasing demand for cars. We will exhaust and crush a car every four years in this business," he said.
