However, post-pandemic responses and achievement successes including state testing has provided an added roadblock to making SEL a priority. It is paramount that school districts and communities collectively engage in the knowledge, implementation, exercise, and maintenance of SEL on a regular and consistent basis for our students and staff. In this presentation, we will educate participants on the definition, research findings, and implications of Social & Emotional Learning of youth, adolescents, and adults. Additionally, how school districts can naturally infuse SEL in-class and outside of class will be presented. Examples of how parents can teach, role model and support the practices of SEL are shared. This presentation will focus on sleep during adolescence, which, after infancy, is the second most critical time period for brain growth. Evidence suggests that adolescents require 8 to 10 hours of sleep nightly to maintain an optimal level of physical and mental health. However, despite the known importance of sleep for brain development, early school start times for middle and high school students coupled with normal biological changes in sleep patterns during adolescence, may put students at greater risk for insufficient sleep.
