We support the package of bills before the Legislature including:
S.3067 - Which establishes the citywide leadership team to ensure that parents' voices are represented in all education decision-making, ensure education policies considered or implemented are conducive to promoting student achievement and enhancing the overall quality of education for students attending public schools in the city of New York, and include all stakeholders at all stages of the decision-making process.
S.3065/A.512 - Which requires district leadership teams to operate under open meetings law requirements.
S.3065/A.505 - Which requires district leadership teams and school leadership teams to include student representatives.
These bills are critical to support NYC school students, parents, caregivers and educators and support meaningful family and community engagement practices in NYC public schools.
We know that when families are meaningfully engaged, students benefit in many ways. When families are involved, student achievement grows, attendance increases, student health and mental health is supported, and they are more likely to graduate and/or have successful post high school careers.
Student and parent voice and partnership is important and these bills will ensure this partnership will be expanded in the NYC school system.
NYC already has a school building-based leadership team, which works to support collective decision-making in school buildings. This legislation would make this process citywide, to ensure the best decisions are made for ALL NYC school children.
NYS PTA, the Queens Community PTSA, and the NYC Community SEPTSA urges its immediate passage.
