On May 1, 2025, the State is planning to require School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) to be moved into Medicaid Managed Care (MMC) for how they receive Medicaid payments. SBHCs are a critical partner in helping to bring essential healthcare for underserved students in both urban and rural areas directly to them during the school day. This proposed shift from SBHCs receiving direct payments for services provided through the State Health Department, to needing to contract with, bill and hope for payments from managed care plans could force SBHCs to close or reduce services. This would cut off essential healthcare services for hundreds of thousands of children who rely on them for primary, mental, and dental health care.
State leaders are currently negotiating the final budget. Please help us to continue to urge state lawmakers and Governor Hochul to stop this carve-in through the final budget before it significantly disrupts care for vulnerable children.
