Despite decades of clean-up efforts, Michigan’s impaired-waters list continues to grow, with more than 50,000 miles of rivers and streams now failing to meet water-quality standards. Immigration-driven population growth makes reversing this trend practically impossible. From 2020 to 2024, the state gained roughly 57,000 residents overall, while net international migration totaled about 164,000 people — meaning migration accounted for nearly three times the state’s net population growth.
As population and development expand, open spaces are converted to roads, rooftops, and parking lots. These impervious surfaces increase stormwater runoff and sewer overflows, carrying pollutants into already-degraded waterways.
