Earlier this week, the New York State Senate passed legislation (S.4365) that would grant three continuing-education credits to active members of statewide professional insurance associations like PIANY.
Under the terms of the bill, sponsored by Sen. Neil D. Breslin, D-44, active members of a statewide professional insurance producer association would be granted three CE credits.
You might be asking yourself: “I get three CE credits just for being a member of PIANY?” Well no, you have to do a little more than “just” be a member. The bill defines active membership as: a licensee that is a member in good standing of a professional insurance producer association; the licensee has certified that they have read such association’s code of ethics; and certification that the licensee has attended at least one course, program of instruction or seminar sponsored by the professional insurance producer association.
To be granted the credits you must be licensed, have read PIANY’s code of ethics and attended at least one course, program of instruction or seminar sponsored by PIANY.
PIA has always been a strong advocate for the passage of bills like S.4365. PIA leadership believes that insurance producer associations should promote professionalism, best practices, ethical compliance, continuing-education training and networking opportunities to their members.
As a professional association, PIA provides legislative advocacy, industry education, information resources, professional development and peer networking opportunities to its members, as well as access to industry leaders, informational resources, volunteer recognition and other member-only benefits. These benefits make our members well-rounded and better informed than the average nonmember producer.
Similar legislation passed both the New York Assembly and the Senate almost unanimously last year, only to be vetoed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. PIANY will continue to advocate for this bill to ensure that this year it is signed by the governor.
