A recent proposal from the U.S. Department of Education could significantly reduce federal student loan access for students pursuing careers in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech‑language pathology.
Under the proposed rule, these programs could be reclassified as “graduate degree programs,” reducing federal loan limits from $50,000 per year (up to $200,000 total) to just $20,500 per year (up to $100,000 total). This change would make it harder for future therapists to afford required professional education and could worsen existing workforce shortages.
Congress is considering legislation, Professional Student Degree Act (H.R. 6718) and Loan Equity for Advanced Professionals Act (H.R. 6574), to prevent this reclassification and protect appropriate loan access for therapy students.
