Below is an opportunity to engage in support of critical legislation. Ask your legislator to support HB 1246, legislation introduced to ensure that all payments made on behalf of patients for medication costs are counted towards their out-of-pocket expenses.
Many patients rely on copay assistance to help cover their costs when getting the medicines they need to manage their chronic conditions. However, many insurance companies have now instituted “copay accumulator programs” that exclude these payments from counting towards patients’ yearly out-of-pocket deductible. This leaves patients with additional unanticipated costs – despite the insurer already receiving full payment.
Patients shouldn’t be left with hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars in bills due to unexpected out-of-pocket payments. Patients’ health care costs are more manageable when all copay payments are counted toward both a patient’s copay and their deductible.
HB 1246 would protect patients by ensuring that any money paid by, or on behalf of, the patient for medication must be counted toward their annual deductible.
