Join us for Sisters Speak Out on June 24
Action Alert
We need to feel outrage as Moses did (Exodus 11.8), as Jesus did (Mark 3.5), as God does in the face of injustice (Amos 2.48, 5.712, Psalm 106.40). It is not good for us to become inured to evil; it is not good when our social consciousness is dulled before an exploitation that is leaving destruction and even death throughout our region.

—Pope Francis, Querida Amazonia

Join us for Sisters Speak Out on June 24

The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas are proud co-sponsors of the upcoming multi-congregational campaign: Sisters Speak Out: A Prayer and Public Witness for Immigrants and a Just Economy. With more than 25 other congregations and Catholic organizations, we invite all sisters, associates, companions, partners in ministries and other allies to join us on Tuesday, June 24 in Washington DC for a public prayer on Capitol Hill. Additionally, there will be local events hosted in June with more information and dates coming soon.

If you would like to register to attend the event in DC or receive notifications about local events, please do so here, and you will receive detailed information.

You can read more about the campaign here.

Background

Justice promoters across congregations have responded to the deep desire of sisters, associates, and allies of women religious to act more publicly and prophetically in response to our federal government’s actions, including mass and unlawful deportations; the dismantling of public institutions and environmental protections; and the current budget debate that includes drastic cuts to Medicaid and SNAP programs.

Our commitment to the gospel and our missions and charisms across congregations urge us to stand in solidarity with immigrants and to respond to the looming budget cuts that threaten to defund vital programs for the most vulnerable members of our community.

Though the Mercy Justice Team isn’t taking an active role in the June 14 No Kings Day demonstrations, we wanted to note to our advocates that there are echo events taking place nationwide. You can go to the No Kings website to find a location near you if you feel called to advocate in that way.
