Self-Advocacy: In an Emergency Situation
Action Alert
Are You Prepared for an Emergency Situation?

In an emergency, time and accuracy are of the essence. Though that is true for everyone, those with spondyloarthritis (SpA) have an especially pressing need for emergency preparedness.

Potential spinal fusion, along with a heightened susceptibility to osteoporosis, can result in spinal fractures from even minor falls and impacts.

Unfortunately, the usual procedures followed by emergency responders could result in serious harm for those living with spondyloarthritis.

But you can provide emergency first responders with critical information - even if you can’t communicate!

Here are six things you can do to keep yourself safe in an emergency situation:

  1. Download SAA’s First Responder Information Card and keep it in your wallet.

  2. Wear medical identification “jewelry/tags” inscribed with “Brittle Spine Disease” and “Ankylosing Spondylitis” since emergency medical personnel are trained to look for these items.

  3. Carry a medical information card in your wallet next to your driver’s license and health insurance card. Be sure that it is legible to the average reader.

  4. For smartphone users who lock their phones, set your Emergency Medical ID to be accessible from the locked screen without needing your passcode.

  5. Download this flyer for ER visits to help emergency care providers gain a basic working knowledge of SpA and the risks associated with an emergency setting.

  6. Listen to this podcast, "From Tragedy to Education and Advocacy: Advances in Airway Management," for information on educating first responders and anesthesiologists about the special risks, care procedures, and self-advocacy suggestions for patients with SpA.
