Media Literacy Instruction and Civic Education in K-12 Schools
It is critical that New York makes important investments to ensure all public schools can provide media literacy instruction and civic education for a sound basic education. The absence of this instruction in New York’s schools leaves millions of students unable to make sense of who creates informational content and why, as well as its collective impact on our perception of our system of government. The well-being of our body politic depends on an informed public, but, sadly, nearly half of all young people get their news from social media influencers, and more than half of adults in the U.S. cannot name the three branches of government. Robust media literacy instruction and civic education are key to rebuilding trust in institutions and one another, fostering informed patriotism and civility, and empowering citizens to build a more perfect union.
