Farm Bill Update

On September 5, a House-Senate Conference Committee held its first meeting to resolve differences on the federal Farm Bill. This important legislation supports anti-hunger programs for low income families and individuals. Catholic advocates met with staff from Senator Maria Cantwell's office last month and several other meetings are likely in September. There is still time to contact your two U.S. Senators and Representative to urge passage of an acceptable bill - visit the WSCC Action Center for more details. |

CCHD - Your Anti-Poverty Initiative at Work

Each of the Washington dioceses holds a national collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), at different times of the year (it is September 16 in the Archdiocese of Seattle). The collection brings change to communities across the country and empowers those living in poverty to transform the places they live into reflections of the Kingdom of God. Those living in poverty locally are empowered through the 25% share of the collection that stays in each diocese. Additionally, national grants are made from the 75% share that is pooled with donations from other dioceses in the U.S.
Just one example of a grant is the Life to Justice Initiative. This CCHD grant to the Church in our state provides significant support for PREPARES - a program to provide pregnancy and parenting support resources for mothers, fathers, and children at the parish level. The PREPARES mission is to provide low-income families with resources, services and referrals resulting in healthy birth outcomes and committed, knowledgeable parents.

Respect Life Month Resources

Here are several resources to mark October's Respect Life month and the Feast of St. Francis (October 4):
USCCB Respect Life Program - The 2018-2019 Respect Life Program kit materials can now be ordered. The theme, "Every Life: Cherished, Chosen, Sent," highlights the call to build a culture of life as missionary disciples. Drawing upon the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, this year's reflection briefly unpacks the poster and theme. Most of the program is available in Spanish as well as English.
Catholic Mobilizing Network - This year's Respect Life Month Toolkit includes a new death penalty and restorative justice book list, a pro-life prayer service, prayers of the faithful in both English and Spanish, as well as social media resources, and bulletin articles.
Catholic Climate Covenant - This year's program, "Who Is My Neighbor In A Climate Threatened World," focuses on the interconnections between immigration, refugees, and climate change. It is a free 90-minute educational program to help parishes and schools to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis on Oct. 4th (or another date of your choosing). |
