    ON MARCH 17, 2014, THE HOUSE ADOPTED AMENDMENT #1 AND PASSED HOUSE BILL 1697, AS AMENDED.

    AMENDMENT #1 rewrites the bill. This amendment requires the state board of education to include cursive writing in the course of instruction in all public schools through the curriculum standards, at the appropriate grade level, as determined by the board. This amendment requires the local board of education to design a curriculum, courses, and content to enable students to create readable documents through legible cursive handwriting. The commissioner of education is required to advise all local boards of the requirements of this bill as amended.
