The Trump administration recently released its 2026 budget proposal, which calls for a massive cut to funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The proposed budget would slash NIH funding by over 40 percent – from $47 billion to $27.915 billion. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) would see a 37.2 percent cut from $7.224 billion in FY25 to $4.531 billion in the FY26 proposal. Continued reductions in force and the termination of numerous grants and contracts also threaten the Cancer Centers Program, which have driven major advances in cancer screening, prevention, and treatment for over 50 years. These cuts will have disastrous consequences for the future of biomedical research, and for patients with cancer. We urge you to write to your congressional delegation to oppose drastic cuts to NIH and NCI funding proposed in President Trump’s budget.
