CMS Issues Proposed Rule Related to Enrollment & Eligibility in Medicaid, CHIP, & Basic Health Program

On Wednesday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule to simplify the process for eligible individuals to enroll and retain eligibility in Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the Basic Health Program. CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure stated, "This proposed rule will ensure that these individuals and families, often from underserved communities, can access the health care and coverage to which they are entitled - a foundational principle of health equity." The proposed requirements intend to streamline application and enrollment, improve retention rates, remove barriers specific to CHIP enrollment, and enhance the integrity of Medicaid and CHIP.

Comments for the proposed rule are due November 7, and ACEP plans to comment.

ACEP Responds to Proposed Reg on Rural Emergency Hospital Conditions of Participation

A few weeks ago, ACEP submitted a comprehensive response to a proposed regulation issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that establishes conditions of participation (CoPs) for Rural Emergency Hospitals (REHs). We also submitted a joint response to the reg with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) focusing on the issue of scope of practice and the importance of having physician-led teams of health professionals provide the care that is delivered in REHs.

Read the Regs & Eggs blog to find out more about ACEP's response to this proposed reg and what modifications we believe CMS should make when it finalizes REH policies later this year.
