Alabama Arise

ACT NOW: Say NO to union busting with public funds!
Working Alabamians are the backbone of our economy. Every car built, road paved and child taught to read in our schools results from working people’s efforts to make a better Alabama. But Alabama’s workers have never been fairly paid for their vital roles compared to workers in other states. SB 231, sponsored by Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, would make it even harder for workers to be paid decent wages for the work they do.

The House may vote on SB 231 as soon as Tuesday, April 23, and we need your voice to help stop this bill. Tell your representative to oppose SB 231.

This bill would strip companies of tax incentives if they voluntarily recognize their workers’ decision to form a union. Voluntary recognition is part of the process available to workers and companies under the National Labor Relations Act. It streamlines the process for unionization and demonstrates that companies value their workers’ autonomy and well-being.

Workers should be able to decide whether to join a union without the Legislature trying to harm people for exercising their rights. This bill, copy-and-pasted from other states’ mistaken anti-worker efforts, could cause wide-ranging damage across many industries. It is particularly shortsighted because companies are increasingly seeing the benefits of voluntary recognition, including reduced turnover rates and quality training programs that result from a unionized workforce.

SB 231 would cut directly against the Legislature’s recent efforts to modernize Alabama’s workforce. It would skew the negotiation process against the workers who are the source of all wealth and unfairly try to keep people from being compensated fairly for their work.

Your representative needs to hear from you that you oppose SB 231, and they should, too.
