But the U.S. House right now is considering budget legislation that would do exactly that. This proposal would make massive cuts to health care and food assistance – all to offset deep tax cuts for the country’s wealthiest households and businesses.
There’s still time to stop this bad budget plan. Take a minute today to tell your U.S. representative to vote NO on harmful cuts to Medicaid and food assistance.
Congressional leaders are seeking to continue tax breaks that overwhelmingly benefit billionaires and highly profitable corporations. But under budget rules, lawmakers would have to offset at least some of the cost of these tax breaks for the wealthy. The House proposes to do that by slashing funding for services that make life better for families who are struggling to make ends meet.
The results could be devastating for Alabama. Thousands of Alabamians enrolled in Medicaid could lose their health coverage. As many as 750,000 Alabamians could see food benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) reduced or eliminated. And for the first time ever, Congress would require states to pay for a portion of SNAP benefits – placing families at unprecedented risk that their essential food assistance could be reduced or eliminated altogether.
Tell your U.S. House member to oppose harmful cuts to health care and food assistance.
The House plan would cut taxes by more than $1 trillion for the richest 2% of U.S. households over the next decade while cutting the same amount from health care and food assistance for the rest of us. This would result in increased poverty and hardship for ordinary Alabamians and increased wealth for the already ultra-rich. The House proposal would imperil basic needs for millions of Americans by shifting costs from the federal government to our already-stretched state budgets. And it would seek to rip away essential food assistance from struggling Alabamians, including parents of young children, by expanding unnecessary red-tape work reporting requirements for SNAP.
Federal lawmakers should reject service cuts for working people and tax giveaways for wealthy households. Our representatives should focus instead on building an economy that works for everyone in Alabama and across our country.
Please email your U.S. representative now and tell them not to slash Medicaid and SNAP to give wealthy people even more tax cuts. Time is of the essence, so please reach out today.
