ACT NOW! Tell Congress to Reject Unprecedented Cuts and Governance Overreach at the National Science Foundation

Please take 2 minutes today to urge Congress to reject the administration’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 budget proposal that seeks a complete dissolution of the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) Directorate and a staggering 54 percent cut to the National Science Foundation (NSF). This proposal is accompanied by the unprecedented firing of the National Science Board, representing a dual threat to the scientific community and the independence of federal research.

The president’s budget request is the start of the FY 2027 appropriation process. Beyond the fiscal cuts, reports indicate that NSF leadership has already begun internal moves to align with the dissolution of the SBE. It is essential that you urge your Members of Congress to work in a bipartisan manner to ensure that these proposed cuts and administrative overhauls are not codified in law.

If enacted, these moves would set the nation back decades. The SBE Directorate funds 63 percent of all academic research in the social and psychological sciences, and the dismissal of the National Science Board undermines the very governance intended to protect such critical work.

The FY 2027 budget proposal and recent actions include the following:

  • The complete elimination of the SBE Directorate.
  • A 54 percent cut to the National Science Foundation.
  • The dismissal of the National Science Board, threatening the transparency and independent oversight of national scientific priorities.
  • The loss of core psychological research that drives national security and AI innovation.
  • A "catastrophic" impact on the pipeline of first-generation scholars and early-career researchers.

While these actions are alarming, the budget remains a proposal without the force of law. In the coming months, Congress will make the final decision on how these programs are funded and governed. We must remind them of their constitutional authority to appropriate funds and their responsibility to ensure the administration implements the law with fidelity.

Now is the time to speak out—send a message to your officials today!

Tips for a successful submission:

  • This tool will automatically identify and match you to your elected officials once you enter your address. However, it cannot match P.O. boxes to Congressional offices, so please enter a street address.
  • Some offices may require a phone number - you will get an on-screen alert if so.
  • If you are a first-time user or entered a different email address than before, VoterVoice might give you an extra step. This is an internet security measure. A window will appear, saying that it sent a code to that email address. Please check your spam folder if you do not get the code within 5 minutes. You will be able to send your message once you enter the code. If you check the "remember me" box, this will not occur again.
  • A small number of Senate offices have limitations on message length. If your office is one of them, you will get a notification on the screen and will be able to edit the message before sending it.
  • This platform allows users to enter the prefix of their choosing. However, congressional offices vary in terms of what prefixes their mail systems accept. If you see a notification regarding your prefix, it is due to one of the receiving congressional offices' inbox settings. Please contact that office directly to ask them to update what prefixes their mailing system accepts, as this request will be more meaningful coming from a constituent. Their website will list contact information.
