Like many older Americans, veterans face a serious risk of falls and fall-related injuries, yet too often are not able to access the preventative care they need to stay safe and independent.
That’s why APTQI strongly supports the bipartisan SAFE STEPS for Veterans Act (H.R.3183/S.668), a bill recently introduced in the U.S. House by Representatives Lois Frankel (D-FL-22), Jennifer Kiggans (R-VA-2), Jack Bergman (R-MI-1), and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-12) and in the U.S. Senate by Senators Angus King (I-ME) and Mike Rounds (R-SD).
This bipartisan legislation would:
- Establish an Office of Falls Prevention and create a falls prevention coordinator within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA)
- Create a pilot program for current home modification grant programs to incorporate evidence-based falls prevention programs as a component of receipt of grant funding
- Expand veteran access to physical therapist-provided falls prevention services, which are a proven strategy to reduce emergency room visits, injuries, and deaths
Please encourage your lawmakers to co-sponsor the SAFE STEPS for Veterans Act to help reduce falls and improve the health and safety for older veterans.
