This is a solvable problem, since we know a relatively small group of chronic offenders is responsible for an outsized share of the harm. According to one study, super speeders are five times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash over regular drivers. Our current strategy of repealing licenses simply isn’t working, as 75% of people still drive after such a loss.
The Stop Super Speeders Act offers a targeted, data-driven response: Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology prevents vehicles from exceeding posted speed limits using GPS and onboard sensors, while still allowing people to get around. Requiring the installation of ISA on a small number of repeat, egregious speeders who pose a disproportionate risk on our roads, keeps the public safe from reckless driving.
Tell the Governor and New York State Assembly and Senate to include the Stop Super Speeders Act in this year’s budget and make it law.
