The Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy has said the federal government shouldn’t be funding bike lanes.
The top member of Congress writing the next transportation reauthorization bill has said that the next five years of federal funding won’t include bicycling and walking projects.
Now the Administration is threatening to tear up bike lanes on federal land in Washington, D.C., putting their rhetoric into action and setting a precedent they may expect other communities across the country to follow.
These actions in DC are based on long-debunked arguments against bike lanes and infrastructure. We know – because the data shows – that bike lanes improve safety, that bike lanes do not decrease travel time for cars, and that bike lanes increase the economic vitality of a region.
If the Administration succeeds in DC, they could do it everywhere (they have already tried to influence how grants are awarded for bicycling infrastructure!)
Stand with DC and tell Congress that people around the country care about bicycling, both in our Nation’s Capitol and in our own neighborhoods. Please join us in pushing back!
Tell Congress you care about bike lanes and safe, connected transportation networks. Ask them to support bicycling and walking in DC and around the country by supporting H.R.2011/S.944 The Sarah Debbink Langenkamp Active Transportation Act, which makes it easier for communities and states to build bicycling and walking safety infrastructure.
