Call Congress - Stop the Cap to NIH Indirect Cost Rates
On Friday, February 7, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued Supplemental Guidance to the 2024 NIH Grants Policy Statement on Indirect Cost Rates. This new Guidance sets a standard rate of 15% on Indirect Costs for all current grants for go forward expenses from February 10 onward and for all new grants. While the implementation of the cut is currently under a temporary injunction, science needs to advocate for itself for a permanent fix.
Take 5 minutes to call your Members of Congress:
- Ask them to protect essential basic and biomedical research;
- Tell them the impact caps on Indirect Cost Rates will have on your lab, staff and research;
- Explain what Indirect Cost Rates, or Facilities & Administration fees, actually cover and mean to the proper working of a research lab;
- If you have a currently funded grant, urge Congress to ensure that NIH honors currently negotiated F&A rates;
- Urge immediate intervention by Congress!
Remember all politics is local - prepare yourself with specific local data on what NIH federal funding means for your state and district.
