DOE Follows Suit with NIH by Issuing Cap to Indirect Costs
On April 11, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a Policy Flash announcing a 15% cap on the "indirect cost rate" for grants awarded to institutions of higher education. The announcement comes as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) continues to halt inefficient spending by universities. This move marks a similar effort directed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that has been halted by the courts.

While a court in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts has issued a temporary injunction to block the implementation of this new indirect rate cap, it is important that Congress continues to be educated on the implications these caps will have on federally funded research.
