California State PTA
Support the Permanent Expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC)
Support the Child Tax Credit expansion to reduce the number of children living in poverty by more than 40 percent nationally.

The California State PTA believes that the permanent expansion of the CTC will help children and families to address some of their most basic needs. This will promote children’s healthy development and well-being, and increase educational opportunities for our most vulnerable children. A permanent expansion of the CTC will also boost local economies and advance racial equity. PTA believes a permanent Child Tax Credit will support our most vulnerable children and will provide them the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The expanded Child Tax Credit currently provides more than 35 million households up to $3,600 (or $300 per month) in tax cuts per child by extending the American Rescue Plan’s expanded Child Tax Credit. The Build Back Better framework will provide monthly payments to the parents of nearly 90 percent of American children for the 2022 year. This is $300 per month per child under six and $250 per month per child ages 6 to 17. This historic tax cut helps cover the cost of food, housing, health care, and transportation for families in need. Studies conducted by organizations such as the Brookings Institution show that this credit has affected the largest one-year reduction in child poverty in history. The framework includes permanent refundability for the Child Tax Credit, meaning that the neediest families will continue to receive the full Child Tax Credit over the long-run.
