  Latest on CCA Oregon Advocacy
It has been a busy month for CCA members and staff on key advocacy priorities, particularly on the Columbia River reforms.  Over the past four months CCA Oregon members have generated thousands of grassroots emails to Governor Kate Brown, the ODFW Commission, and legislators.   CCA Oregon has also run a campaign to engage fishing license holders who purchased the Columbia River endorsement, key environmental organizations, and key legislative allies.  These efforts are making a HUGE difference and would not have been possible without your support and membership in CCA!

January 5/6 - Letters sent by Oregon Wild and the Oregon League of Conservation Voters to Governor Brown and ODFW Commission urging them to stay the course on the gillnet reforms.

January 14 - Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission votes 7-2 to adopt limited changes to bi-state gillnet reforms, affirms the shift to selective fishing gear and a recreational priority.  CCA Washington worked to generate letters from 54 state legislators in support of the reforms and packed the room with members and supporters.

January 20 - Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission votes 4-3 to permanently allow the continued use of non-tribal gillnets in the Columbia River, effectively jettisoning the bi-state reforms, the intent of Senate Bill 830, and the trust of recreational anglers - ODFW's largest source of revenue.  CCA Oregon members filled the room and two CCA representatives were on a sportfishing panel - CCA Oregon issues a statement on the Commission's reckless decision.

January 22  - Sen. Fred Girod (R-Stayton) and other legislative allies prepare legislation to hold ODFW accountable for the Commission's decision, including potential budget ramifications outlined in a January 18 letter to the Commission from Girod.  Focus shifts to the legislature.

February 3 -  Oregon Rep. Bill Kennemer (R-Oregon City) blasts the Commission's decision in a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives and calls on the four commissioners to resign if the decision is not reversed.  CCA Oregon launches a grassroots alert urging anglers to call Governor Kate Brown and attend upcoming Commission reception.

February 9 - Governor Brown sends a strongly worded letter to the ODFW Commission objecting to its decision and directing it to adopt a plan that honors SB 830 and concurrent management with Washington.  CCA issues statement commending Brown's letter and hundreds of CCA members and concerned citizens attend ODFW Commission "Town Hall" and visit the CCA Oregon booth at Sportsmen's Show.

February 14 - ODFW convenes a rules advisory committee ahead of a planned mid-March decision to reverse the reckless January 20 rules adopted by the Commission.  CCA's Government Relations Chairman was appointed to the committee.

We are encouraged by these recent developments, we also know that our work is not done - stay tuned for future update.  We know this fight will never go away and we must continue to grow CCA's membership to increase our political influence!

Other key issues:  CCA is closely tracking the recent announcement of the Army Corps of Engineers that threatens hatchery production throughout Western Oregon and are currently developing an appropriate response.  CCA is also working with our federal delegation to reintroduce legislation to address the severe threat that growing populations of sea lions pose to ESA-listed and wild salmon and steelhead in the Columbia and Willamette Rivers.

  Upcoming CCA Oregon Chapters

With the help of CCA Oregon leadership and volunteers we have been busy traveling the state to start new chapters and hold meetings.  We have spoke with community leaders from Coos Bay to La Grande on how the CCA model works and why the CCA footprint in these communities is important to all of Oregon.  The response has been positive and we are optomistic that we will find the right chapter leadership and have active chapters in these communities soon. If you know anyone living in these areas, please spread the word and encourage them to help the chapter develop!  Or if you are interested in helping out in these communities, please reach out to Executive Director Chris Cone at chris.cone@ccaoregon.org

  CCA Oregon in the News
You might have seen it already and I am sure you already know.  CCA Oregon is the tip of the spear when it comes to the Columbia River reforms and removing Gillnets off the main stem of the Columbia River.   This is evident by the focused backlash from the Gillnetter community in print and social media.

In fact CCA Oregon is finally getting attention and credit from local media outlets as well.  An example of that is this post from Oregon Live.

KOIN 6 attended the CCA town hall at last weeks sportsman's show that was attended by 80 plus concerned anglers.  KOIN 6 interviewed legislators that support the Columbia River Reforms from both Oregon and Washington, as well as CCA leadership before presentations and Q&A.

Incase you missed it, here is another thing that KOIN 6 did, its a piece a few days ago they put out on Facebook and CCA had influence on.  The Gillnet issue now seems to have the attention of mainstream media; which is good for conservation!  Which is good for CCA!

This all happened because members got involved and participated on committees.  Huge shout out to Jon Haas and Communications Committee team for the aggressive work they are doing to promote the benefits and actions of CCA Oregon.
